Breathe Atlantis bring fresh air with new release Soulmade

Breathe Atlantis is a German band whose previous release garnered a deal of praise in the alt-rock arena. They are an entertaining mix of rock, pop and electronica and bring to mind Pierce The Veil with their approach to rhythm and genre mix-ups. The latest release, Soulmade, provides just that.

Opener ‘My Supernova’ paints the picture for the album with its soulful and yet metallic vocals and heavy pop sense with rapid fire backing and clever structure. ‘Fall’ conjures up Bring Me The Horizon with its electronics and more of those hefty pop elements. Even poppier is the insanely catchy ‘Spirit’ with its piano and oh-ohs aplenty. Closing song, ‘Everyone Else’ is U2 with feeling and depth and lacks the Edge! It is more of the same heavy chorus driven, heavy pop and sums up the bands ethos perfectly.

Overall Soulmade is too poppy for my taste but there is no doubt that these guys know how to write and play. It is guitar driven rock with a huge chunk of alt. and, when not screaming, the vocals have a great depth and soul to them even if they occasionally remind me of the Sam Smith type of approach to phrasing. If you like a sound that evokes a sort of Rock/Pop/Punk hybrid then there is a lot to be gleaned from this polished release.

I'm fortunate to have retired early & I can now take full advantage of the 40+ years I have spent collecting, listening, watching & playing (badly) & have enjoyed researching how blues in particular has shaped the music we know & love today. Now if only I could get my Strat & Musicman to sound in reality how they do in my head!
