Review: Altar of Betelgeuze – Among the Ruins

Now this fuzz orientated riff is what stoner metal is about – it shows a hearty pull of sonic cosmic infectiousness, that pleasures the ears. The vocals are unusual due to their grazing whispered effect along with a demonic devilish growl that smells of death metal – but no complaints here what so ever!

Altar of Betelgeuze ‘Sledge of Stonesallows the bass hooks to flow freely and explore their territory, while the drums are slow paced but still pack a punch along with a gruelling vocal, making it an interesting track indeed. ‘No Return’ is where the stoner/doom throws its light casting shadows over the proceedings in a very minimalistic way. There isn’t a lot happening in this track and could be classed as one of their weaker ones. ‘New Dawn’ throbs and puts pressure on the senses. Its rhapsody is harsh and unyielding, powerful and slightly unhinged in the riff department – not that that is a bad thing at all. ‘Absence of Light’ is a rather sensual number using crisp guitar to unfold its beautiful encounter. The mesmerising rhythms lock into your head and heart and causing a potent and thrilling excitement.

‘Advocates of Deception’ benefits from a repetitive rhythm of drum beats and riffs that coincide with a humongous bass riff that digs deep into the psyche. ‘Among the Ruins’ is a slow amble but with sneaky rhythms and chiming cymbals. It is quite an unassuming track that doesn’t go all out to wake the soul more soothes it into a slumber with ambience and strong grooves.

I have to say that this has been quite an eye opener – jaw dropper! The stoner doom element is prevalent and when you add in those low toned muffled growls it really puts you in the zone, so to speak. The craft of the guitars and the bass mould the tracks together like a good welder who knows his job. The vocals are seething, raw and plentiful. It isn’t a unique album but it offers the listener a chance to chill, relax and enjoy what is on offer. It can be quite mesmerising in places and dark and profound in others so you are getting an all-round stoner doom death metal experience. It is honest and stirring and waiting in the wings are an emotive force that carries it to its limits. It definitely impacts on hearing and most of the time keeps you satisfied.

Altar of Betelgeuze Among the Ruins ia out via Transcending Obscurity Records on 15th April 2017.
