Review: Syren City – Paradise in the Dirt

Syren City Paradise in the Dirt is out 24th June 2016

Syren City are a Bristol based rock band taking their influences from a wide range of punk, metal and hard core, combining to make a huge great British hard rock sound. The band have firmly established themselves in amongst the underground scene.

Throughout the last year the band have gigged extensively, touring the UK, and playing festivals. They’ve played alongside the likes of Don Broco, Cancer Bats, Skindred, We are the Ocean, Mallory Knox, Frank Iero, Turbowolf and While She Sleeps.

Before that, the band performed as part of Surface Festival in 2012, coming first in the Wales and West Regional final and performing at the O2 Arena as a part of the International Festival for New Music!

The first track on this lively EP entitled ‘It’s Morphine time’ is phenomenal and more along the lines of rebel rousing hard core than just merely rock, although the term rock is definitely present! Festering with unbridled velocity, strikingly enjoyable, and caustic rhythms, it’s spicy and haunting with deep felt emotion. Vocally engaging with great use of bass and guitar. I just love this particular track! It has its own distinct heavy sound that rumbles, mixed with great harmonies and perplexing rhythms, so it’s indeed a great start.

Second track ‘Danielle’ is very diverse from the previous one, a lot lower key but has this captivating bass line and then as it turns a corner a hardened groove takes hold and back to that fabulous bass line again. A very creative track that is sultry yet raw in delivery. Again the harmonies are perfection. Like a stick of rock it has that heavy vibe running through its core and is a very poignant deep track offering so much more. It really gives the vocal a storyline in which it croons in places and then appears to sonically explode.

Syren_City_Promo_Shot‘10,000 Knives’ is raunchy and to the bone, although it loosens its grip on the heavier stance slightly until it hands over to the more raucous side and simply explodes into a pulsating rouse of melodic addictiveness, and time to get that volume dial moving further up the scale. A deeply enjoyable track!

One can’t help but believe that this is only a taster EP, just enough to whet the appetite leaving the listener wanting that bit more. It is a great combination of punk, metal and hard core and the band have utilised it to the best of their abilities.

However I am not convinced about the cover as I don’t think it does the band justice at all and feel they need something ‘serious’ to really push the music home. But it is without a doubt a very diverse and interesting EP.

The band holds you captive, but they don’t have to force the issue and embrace the ears with a wealth of sound.

The softer moments are also melodical and emotional and descriptively dramatic as well as absorbing. Exploring a creative scenery, twisting and turning and covering every angle, despite its short life, there is something for everyone to enjoy on this 3 track EP.

A recommended listen!
