2014 see’s many different types of sub genres of rock, metal and hardcore music, many having a sub-sub-genre and so forth. But picture this – the love child of post-hardcore and dub-step. The result = Scream-step! Scream-step aims towards a more heavier aggressive Dub-Step beat but with those ever so more appealing screams, could this be a new testament to where two worlds collide?
Brothers Grimm – a band founded in the fall of 2012 is made up from Dann Grimm (Screams/beats) Adam Grimm (Clean vox) Billy Grimm (dub-step producer) and have taken to the world of YouTube and FaceBook and already have a huge following. While some bands these days are using dance and dub-step in some songs to break it up, Brothers Grimm are blending together synths and screams for a truly unique experience. Brothers Grimm are set to release new EP ‘All Is Well’ on the 19th February 2014, which will be available via iTunes. The EP currently has two singles that can be heard on YouTube or via the bands FaceBook page. These singles ‘Beautiful Lie’ and ‘Nightlife’ have taken much praise from the keyboard warriors of the internet and look to do well!
We caught up with Dann Grimm just before the release of the EP and here is what he had to say…
How did the Brothers Grimm come together?
“This is actually a pretty long story but in short – during the fall of 2012 I had been working with the idea of adding screams to beats in creating a new genre by coupling screams with dub-step beats without guitars, drums, or any other typical instruments that you might find at a post-hardcore show.”
“At first I was creating all the beats and providing all the vocals for a band I stylistically dubbed ‘The White Ghost Party’. About a month into that project I decided I’d really like to add the versatility of cleans to our material and would also like to add a GOOD dub-step artist into the fold as well (to handle production).”
“About a month later I found and connected with Adam (clean vox) via YouTube, we officially settled on Brothers Grimm as the name a few months later and Billy (dub-step producer) came about 8 months after that, as we had been demoing with a few of his tracks prior and talking it over with Adam. He was also talking with his agent about possible collaborations…. This whole band has been a HUGE process so far haha.”
How would you describe your sound?
“Skrillex meets Breathe Carolina (Think older B.C. material).”
What was the inspiration for your sound?
“To be honest, I’ve always been a DIE HARD fan of electronic music. I loved Breathe Electric (now Gold House) and he majorly inspired me to pursue this style of music. I think after he released his second EP ‘Lovestruck’ in 2010 was when I really really got into this kinda stuff, I remember spending tons of money on Kong equipment and Propellerhead technology, I really had no direction and could hardly scream, it was pretty funny starting out.”
Who are your main influences?
“This is a tough one. It’s kinda funny too; the people I’m most inspired by have no stake in the electronic world. I’m a HUGE fan of Switchfoot, and Jon Foreman has really been a strong influence on me individually, such a solid humble dude. From a more direct perspective Jake Luhrs of August Burns Red really pushed me forward in this scene – as his first CD with ABR ‘Messengers’ really got me into that heavier style of music. Underoath are also a massive influence for me personally – they really helped pave the road for extreme vocal bands everywhere. We have that and so much more to thank them for.”
Which direction do you see yourself going in the future?
“I see our music (instrumentally) going the more aggressive dub-step route. Our early demos were pretty catchy but missing that heavier dub-step sound we’re currently developing, which you’ll find more of on this EP. From a personal perspective both Adam and I enjoy the heavier stuff and I think that’s where we’d like to head in terms on instrumentals.”
What’s a Brothers Grimm Live Show like?
“We haven’t actually played a live show yet. It’s been tough because I (Dann Grinn) live in New Hampshire, and Adam and Billy both live in Indiana. I’d like to play shows soon, and once we do expect the world! They will be nuts! I think the overall production is going to include tons of mac books, lights, screams, and heavy thumping bass!”
Can we expect to see Brother Grimm over in the UK anytime soon?
“I hope so sooner than later! I miss the UK!”
What does the future hold for Brothers Grimm?
“In short we just dropped our management team so we’d like to pick up another team asap, shop labels, play shows, and prepare for future material and releases. So much going on right now!”
Thanks for talking to us Dann Grimm. On a personal level, Brothers Grimm have taken me by surprise and have been the cause of many exciting sensations in my ears! I wish them well and hope to see Brothers Grimm in the UK ASAP!
