Mortiis, dungeon synth pioneer and former bassist/lyricist with legendary black metal band Emperor, and Dayal Patterson (Cult Never Dies) will be appearing at the Albion Dungeon Fest on Saturday 15th February, where they participate in a live discussion, followed by a book signing.
The on-stage talk will explore the creation of Mortiis’ autobiography, Mortiis – Secrets Of My Kingdom, and delve into his significant participation in the new Dark Dungeon Music: The Unlikely Story of Dungeon Synth book.
Back in print as of late 2024 with new cover art, Mortiis – Secrets Of My Kingdom provides an unforgettable insight into the otherworldly creations of dark ambient godfather Mortiis. A unique and compelling collection of writings and illustrations, it significantly fleshes out the rich universe that is glimpsed within those early musical releases. Considered a legendary tome by fans, the rare original changes hands for hundreds of dollars today.
Considerably expanded with 100 pages of new material, this ambitious 240-page large format (30x21cm) hardback book contains the original in its entirety as well as previously unseen text and illustrations, an extensive new interview with Mortiis, plus words from peers, the book’s illustrators, musicians from the growing dungeon synth movement (including Mark Riddick, David Thiérrée, Albert Mudrian, Juha Vuorma, Proscriptor, Balrog, Forgotten Kingdoms, Chaucerian Myth and more).
Dark Dungeon Music: The Unlikely Story of Dungeon Synth, written by Jordan Whiteman of Ancient Meadow Records and edited by Dayal Patterson, is a comprehensive exploration of the dungeon synth genre.
Born from the fringes of the black metal scene in the 1990s, dungeon synth has not only returned but exploded, in recent years, with a legion of new musicians picking up the torch. Dark Dungeon Music chronicles this journey, offering a comprehensive exploration of the genre’s origins, key figures and enduring appeal.
Interviews featured in the book include Mortiis, Cernunnos Woods, Equitant, Erang, The Dark Funeral, Depressive Silence, Maelifell, Forgotten Pathways, Essoupi, Old Tower, The Soil Bleeds Black Eternal Fear, Nocturnal Funeral, Casket Of Dreams, Lothlorien Dreamscape, David Thiérrée, Frostgard, Blood Tower, Moonworshipper Records, Ghoëst, Out of Season, Erythrite Throne, An Old Sad Ghost, Kyvon, Coniferous Myst and many more.
With an exclusive cover illustration by David Thiérrée, Dark Dungeon Music features over 400 large (30×22 cm) pages including a 32-page gloss/colour photo section, 200,000 words of content and 500 images, many previously unpublished.
