The first images of Gary Moore’s statue have just dropped, and his sister Patricia says it’s “overwhelming.” After years of campaigning, the clay model is done, and it looks incredible. But there’s a catch: they need another £70k to cast it in bronze and get it standing in Belfast where it belongs.
Sculptor David A Annand, the genius behind Billy Connolly’s Glasgow statue, has nailed the likeness. Gary’s family have given it their blessing, and Belfast City Council is hunting for the perfect spot in the city’s cultural quarter. The clay model’s secured and ready for casting, but they need one massive push to get this over the line.
Moore grew up in Belfast before heading to Dublin as a teenager, where he met Thin Lizzy’s Phil Lynott. The rest is rock history. From Skid Row to his own solo career, Gary’s guitar work was untouchable. Still Got The Blues went global in 1990, and he shared stages with everyone from Ozzy Osbourne to BB King. When he died in February 2011, the world lost one of its finest guitarists.
Patricia Moore puts it perfectly: “We wanted every fan to say, ‘I helped put this statue here.'” Fan support has funded the clay work through tribute gigs and crowdfunding. Now they need that final surge to make it real.
Belfast deserves this. Gary Moore deserves this. And honestly? We all deserve a place to pay our respects to a legend.
