Norwegian punk-rock powerhouse Ida Maria’s Seven Deadly Sins + 3 is due on 26th September via Indie Recordings.
Described as “a riotous, confessional, and deeply personal punk-rock opus that confronts our ugliest truths with blistering honesty and a wicked grin,” it was written and recorded with her longtime core band – Jan Ole Kristensen, Ruben Fredheim Oma and Alf Magne Hillestad, alongside producer Martin Selen and engineer Hans Petter Heggli.
Out now is her latest single, ‘Pride’ described as delightfully confrontational”. In her signature style, Ida Maria tackles the theme with full force, a twinkle in her eye – and a few high-heeled gut kicks.
‘Pride’ runs on a dangerous groove, bold charm, and feminine power – giving Ida Maria the perfect platform to showcase just how sharp she is as both a songwriter and a vocalist. She also toys with the paradoxes of today’s society, aiming to spark questions rather than point fingers.
This song celebrates pride, confidence, and freedom – while also holding you accountable for your own actions. You have to dare to stand by your choices, and stop seeking validation from others. Musically, ‘Pride’ is a sizzling punk rock single, dressed in a generous dose of indie-sleaze attitude.
From the volcanic fury of ‘Still Angry’ (co-written with Finnish rocker Joonas Parkkonen) to the unhinged groove of ‘Lazy’, Seven Deadly Sins + 3 is a brutally honest take on shame, duty and the paradox of living in a world that preaches modesty while idolizing fame and fortune. As such each track is a sin dissected, and shouted out loud with no remorse.
“I’ve dabbled with sin, I’ve dabbled with religion — both can be dangerous if taken too far,” said Maria. “This project isn’t about casting stones. It’s a shopping list of been there, done that. You can’t sin all day and all night — It’s exhausting.”
The core idea for the album was sparked in Helsinki during a writing session with Topi Latukka and Aleksi Kiskinen where the track ‘More‘ was born and sparked a brand new fire in Ida Maria – A bold anthem of hunger, ambition, and the human itch for excess. It set the tone for an album that doesn’t just name sins.
Seven Deadly Sins + 3 also features guest performances from legends like Sivert Høyem (Madrugada), Dave Krusen and Tommy Akerholt, adding unexpected textures to an otherwise raw and direct sonic assault.
A punk-rock shapeshifter who’s flirted with every subgenre from riot girl to glam rock, Ida Maria describes her sound simply as: “A completely bonkers single mom dabbling with forces she doesn’t understand. A punk rocker trying to explain some things.”
For nearly two decades, Maria has set her own rules, building a legacy that resists every attempt at softening her edges. From her 2008 breakout debut Fortress Round My Heart to viral anthems like I Like You So Much Better When You’re Naked‘, her music has always offered a kind of sonic confessionale. “Music is sacred,” she said. “I don’t cast spells without a reason. I know its power.”
Born and raised in Nesna, northern Norway — a tiny coastal town where self-entertainment was survival — Ida Maria’s roots run deep. It’s this grounding, combined with her global experience, that fuels her latest record. She’s not just singing about sin — she’s turning it into poetry, philosophy, and punk-rock theology.
And as always, she’s not holding back. “This is my comment on the world and myself. I’m not trying to project my sins — just have a fun discussion about them.”
Earlier this summer, she released the single ‘Lust’. As you might expect ‘Lust” is sexy, delicious, and unapologetically enticing. With funky bass, slick rhythm guitars, its been described as having “a groove made to dance on your ex’s memory!”
Continuing her bold exploration of the seven deadly sins, Maria confronted the sin of lust with the same level of sass and power as heard on her previous two singles ‘More’ and ‘Lazy’. This new song explore how amazing it is to be wanted and to experience positive reinforcement on your body or your energy, but it also questions who the real sinner is?
The lusting or the lusted for? Love the body you’re in, feel good in your skin, and enjoy the fire of long summer nights. Lust is a celebration of freedom, desire, and turning shame into strength!
With ‘Lazy’, it proved to be a song as anything but; with sass turned up to 11, and a well-aimed dose of female rage. A massive rock song, wrapped in electrifying fuzz, an angelic male choir, and fat riffs — all served on a bed of questionable moral choices and an unwavering focus on the immediate present, like all of Ida Maria’s songs, ‘Lazy’ has layers, and though it may come across as a punk party banger at first listen – it’s also a song about confronting your inner demons.
It’s hard work to take on the full responsibility for your actions and your life; everyone has moments where they’d rather just live in the moment with no regard for the consequences their choices have on others. Why work when you can party, why build when it’s so much easier to tear things apart?
