Spooky Scary Skeletons with Izzy Reign

With Halloween season in full swing Izzy Reign continues to follow the dark path with a bit of light hearted humour in ‘Spooky Scary Skeletons‘ originally written by Andrew Gold and released on his 1996 album Halloween Howls: Fun & Scary Music.

With her blend of alternative, alt-pop, and chill pop elements, Reign turns the once-goofy Halloween staple into a dark and atmospheric track filled with eerie undertones and haunting vibes. With  synthesisers, deep bass, eerie guitars, and rhythmic drums fused around her sultry vocals the cover reimagines the song in a way that’s perfect for the spookiest season, conjuring an ominous, cinematic atmosphere.

“I took one of my all time favourite Halloween songs and wanted to make the spookiest version of it possible,” explained Reign. “Turning what once was a happy goofy innocent sounding song, into something you would put into a horror movie trailer. I worked at Spirit Halloween for 10 years and every year, if you didn’t know, they play almost the exact same playlist, aside from some new additions, and every year, I would get overly excited to start up the store playlist, even before the stores were set up, Just to hear ‘Spooky Scary Skeletons’, which at the time, was voted by most of my co-workers as the most annoying song. hahah! And that never stopped me.”

A big fan of the spooky season, Reign’s cover of ‘This Is Halloween’ from The Nightmare Before Christmas is one of the most used versions on Tik Tok. Diving into the darkness full force a while back she issued a metal cover of Rob Zombie’s iconic single ‘Living Dead Girl’.

Channeling the raw energy of the original while she brings her own sound to the mix Izzy Reign’s cover has resulted in a version that’s been described as “both a tribute and a reinvention”. The lady herself commented: “We wanted to create a cover that still paid tribute to the original. The original song is such an amazing work of art already that we didn’t want to do any more than bring our own elements to it to make it an Izzy Reign version.”

That in turn followed the alternative pop metal of ‘Into Oblivion’, taken from her upcoming debut album out early 2025 from FiXT.

“This is your time to sacrifice.” Intense is only the starting baseline as Izzy Reign dives deep into the the psyche’s darkest corners. This latest offering blends elements of metalcore, alternative pop, and alternative metal, creating a unique soundscape that is both haunting and electrifying. The song captures the haunting experience of living in constant anticipation of one’s fate, a theme that resonates with Izzy’s personal struggle with religious-induced OCD and intrusive thoughts.

“This song is about the Egyptian goddess of death, Ammit and the constant feeling of waiting to know your fate,” explained Izzy Reign. “I wanted to pull influences from a few different like My Chemical Romance, or Kim Dracula for their theatrical vocal styles but also draw interesting harmonies from artist like Imogen Heap. I wrote this song because one of the dark parts of myself stemmed from going to church and constantly being surrounded by religion and one of the major downfalls that lingered with me was the ultimate judgment. I thought about it so consistently that I became obsessive with everything I said or did, leading to severe OCD and horrifying intrusive thoughts.”

Continuing on her track of crushing boundaries Izzy Reign’s previous single, ‘Pandora’s Box‘, was described as “an enigmatic fusion of metalcore, alternative pop, and metal”.

“In this song, I wanted to bring in a wave of different emotions of instability,” said Reign. “So I wanted to reflect that musically by adding different music styles, starting with a hard EDM drop as the first chorus, giving the ‘ignore the problems, just have fun’ vibe and surly turning into the heavy alt choruses which give the same feeling but more aggressive and chaotic. All while mixing in the breaking point of feeling the truth.”

It follows a recent bout of singles, the one before taking inspiration from the movie Get Out,  for the third single, from her next album, ‘Sandman’.

Equal parts brutal and ethereal with an official music video that’s whimsically macabre you’d have to see to believe. You can purchase/stream it here.

It followed previous single, ‘The Sunken Place’, that was a deep dive into personal introspection. As Reign explained, Creating this song, for me, it was a way to reflect on a personal quality of mine that I’ve always disliked about myself. The ability to manipulate situations or opinions of other people. Although knowing this ability personally stems from learned survival mode. It is written from the perspective of those who use this ability for their own advantage. The inspiration heavily derived from the film Get Out.”

That single captures the essence of metalcore and alternative metal and is available now on all platforms from FiXT here
