Canadian singer/songwriter and guitarist Marcus Trummer is due to deliver a heady mix of blues, soul and rock on his debut album, From The Start, due out on Friday 15th November from Gypsy Soul Records, and ahead of that is ‘Holding Out For You‘, his latest single taken from the long player.
The single is available now on all streaming platforms here and you can watch the official ‘Holding Out For You’ music video here at RAMzine.
“This song delves into the bittersweet emotions of the one that got away,” said Trummer. “It captures the lingering reflections on a past relationship that, for one reason or another, couldn’t stand the test of time.
“The lyrics explore the yearning for what could have been, underscoring the deep connection that once existed,” he continued. “Despite the heartache, there’s a faint glimmer of hope woven through the song – A belief that maybe, just maybe, circumstances will shift in the future, and the love that slipped through the cracks might find its way back. It’s a poignant tribute to love lost, but not entirely forgotten, with emotions that balance between nostalgia, regret, and quiet optimism.”
A Sunday morning, alone and blue, sip your coffee, put aside those newspapers then look outside your window and watch the falling autumnal leaves. ‘Holding Out For You’ is the kind of single that’s listened best to during such quiet moments. Brass and organ stir you into life, Trummer’s soulful crooning voice draws you in and patiently you’ll listen and, quite likely, sympathise with his predicament. A muscular guitar solo emits briefly, possibly feigning masculine pride, you nod and take another sip of that coffee, smiling as the chorus hook returns and repeats through to fadeout.
‘Holding Out For You’ follows ‘Hard Time‘, his third single taken from the long player.
“‘Hard Time’ is about the fact that love is ultimately what matters and is what we need to be aimed at spreading,” Trummer commented about that release.
“Our world is truly a crazy and chaotic place, with what feels like endless division, conflict, and tragedy. With all the pain and suffering out there, I believe love is the only answer. It can be easy to forget when you’re caught up in the daily grind of it all, but it truly is everything and I try to keep that in mind.”
Available on streaming platforms here we advise you to check out the video here at RAMzine too – Trummer’s soulful voice draws you in, intrigued about what he has to say in this song. From the accompanying video’s early busking scenes you can picture how the rudiments of it strummed into life. As The Commoners’ Miles Evans-Branagh’s piano embroiders the piece with horns punctuating and reacting accordingly we move through some colourful city scenery… Oh, for an English town to be so clean these days! Soul-voiced, romantically slow and blues based, possibly his best single thus far.
Regarding Trummer’s previous single, ‘Waiting For Change’ he said: “I wrote ‘Waiting For Change’ after feeling powerless to change things going on in society and in politics that I felt weren’t right.
“It’s a message of empowerment that serves as a reminder to me and others that you don’t have to be complacent with the direction culture is going in. Life is too short to waste time being afraid to stand up for what we believe in.”
Available on all streaming platforms here you can also check out a live video of the song here at RAMzine, it rides on a soft-touched funky bassline that falls somewhere between Humble Pie’s Greg Ridley and Stanley Sheldon’s (Peter Frampton, Tommy Bolin) classic turnarounds.
The album was produced and mixed by The Commoners’ guitarist Ross Hayes Citrullo and Renan Yildizdogan (Samantha Martin & Delta Sugar, Bywater Call, The Commoners), and it also features The Commoners’ Miles Evans-Branagh on keyboards and piano, and drummer Adam Cannon, two-time Juno nominee, Canadian soul sensation Samantha Martin & Delta Sugar‘s horn section of Tom Moffett (trumpet) and Andrew Moljgun (saxophone), soulful background vocals provided by Gypsy Soul recording artist Nicky Lawrence, additional drums from Silas Trummer and Stacey Shopsowitzon bass.
A young blood with an old soul, Trummer marries modern sensibilities with tradition in his distinctive style that encompasses blues, soul, and rock. Dubbed “a precocious guitarist whose vocals possess a wise-beyond-his-years weariness,” by the Calgary Herald, the Calgary-born artist is already earning critical acclaim and recognition.
In September 2019, Trummer was the recipient of theProphets ofMusic Emerging Artist Award at Calgary’s YYC Music Awards. In 2022, he won Blues Recording of theYear at Calgary’s YYC Music Awards.
In 2022, Trummer received a nomination for New Artist of the Year at the Maple Blues Awardsin Toronto. The following year, he travelled to Colorado to perform as a finalist in the 2023 Telluride Blues Challenge, that he would go on to win.
Trummer’s music draws inspiration from the timeless sounds of the 60s and 70s. With his warm and emotive vocals, Trummer pays respect to classic soul singers like Bill Withers and Al Green. His expressive guitar work channels the impassioned approach of players like B.B. King and Jimi Hendrix.
Packed with raw emotion and honesty, Trummer’s songwriting is not to be overlooked. It’s said that “his thoughtful lyrics examine universal subjects of love and coming of age, unpacking experiences that resonate with all listeners.”
