There’s something beautifully honest about a band that describes their own work as “god-awful demo versions” before asking you to listen. Vornoff, the now-defunct dungeon synth and lo-fi dark ambient project, has done exactly that with Alsdybet, a collection of previously unreleased material dating back to 2003-2006.
Recorded on a 4-track device in Aarhus, Denmark, these compositions were recently discovered when the project’s architect J.N. went digging through old archives. What emerged is a murky, unrefined descent into darkness that somehow feels more genuine for its rough edges.
The self-deprecating press release admits to “a complete lack of self-respect” in releasing these sketches and rehearsal tracks. But strip away the humour and you’ll find something worth your time. There are genuine gems buried in this collection, ideas that feel like half-remembered dreams, compositions that reward patient listening.
Lo-fi dark ambient thrives on imperfection. The tape hiss, the muddied frequencies, the sense that you’re hearing something not quite meant for public consumption. Alsdybet delivers all of this in abundance. It’s the sonic equivalent of finding someone’s personal journal from two decades ago, intimate and unguarded in ways polished releases rarely manage.
For fans of the dungeon synth underground, this is essential archival material. For newcomers, it’s perhaps not the ideal entry point, but there’s an authenticity here that sanitised modern productions often lack.
Alsdybet was released December 5, 2025 via Floodgate Moods Productions on Bandcamp and YouTube. Cover photography by J.N. with artwork and layout by G. Owen Wears.
