Husband and wife duo Starlite & Campbell has a new single out, a cover of ‘Song To The Siren’, first featured on Tim Buckley’s 1970 classic album Starsailor.
Co-written by Buckley and Larry Beckett, the song has become legendary not least because it’s a powerful ballad that means many things to many people – This can be testified by the varying interpretations made by so many different artists over the years, ranging from Robert Plant to Pat Boone, and Sinéad O’Connor to Garbage.
The ancient image of the siren has enchanted seafaring history for centuries. Inspired by Homer’s Odyssey, the song tells the story of the sirens who lure unwitting sailors to their deaths on the rocks. It transpires Suzy Starlite and Simon Campbell understand and respect the deep call of the water – Be that river, sea or ocean.
Campbell has led many expeditions as a national instructor and first-class diver of the British Sub Aqua Club. His adventures to the Falkland Islands and St. Kilda earned him the honour of being made a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, as previously bestowed on curious explorers such as Livingstone, Stanley, Scott, Shackleton, Hunt, and Hillary.
Whereas for Starlite, ‘Song To The Siren’ has a personal connection as she lost a childhood friend when she drowned off the coast of Bude in Cornwall. In search of an authentic rendition, she reinstated the original lyrics “I am puzzled as the oyster.” After all, who hasn’t met an oyster that wasn’t puzzled?
A song of love, hope and loss, ‘Song To The Siren’ is available on all streaming platforms and you can check out the duo’s video for it here at RAMzine.
