The Fake Friends are gearing up to release their debut LP Let’s Not Overthink This, out December 11th on Stomp Records, and they’re kicking things off with ‘A Sucker Born Every Minute’, out now.
This is an infectious slice of dance-punk. Frontman Matthew Savage leads a lineup that reads like a who’s who of Montreal’s underground: guitarists Felix Crawford-Legault and Luca Santilli, bassist Michael Kamps, keyboardist Bradley Cooper-Graham, and drummer Michael Tomizzi. These are scene veterans who’ve shared stages, apartments, and probably more than a few questionable late-night decisions.
The track threads dance-punk tension through a thick post-punk backbone, landing somewhere between Parquet Courts, Culture Abuse, and the rawer edges of early 2000s alt-rock. The guitars wind tight while the rhythm section stays both precise and restless. Savage leans into lyrics about burned bridges and the impulse to run from responsibility.
It’s the kind of track that’ll get people moving at shows while giving them something to chew on lyrically. For a debut single from what’s essentially a supergroup of Montreal scene veterans, it’s a confident statement.
The band have already carved out a reputation beyond their hometown, touring throughout the Midwest and East Coast, landing placements on Hockey Night in Canada, and opening for Buzzcocks, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, and Wine Lips. With the full album arriving in 2026, ‘A Sucker Born Every Minute’ sets the tone for what’s coming: post-punk sharpness, melodic hooks, and a distinctly Montreal kind of honesty.
