Acclaimed English singer-songwriter Thea Gilmore will have a comprehensive seven CD box set released on 31st October through Cherry Red Records – Titled My Own Private Riot it dives deep into one of her creatively rich periods, featuring six full-length albums and a live set.
Housed in a beautifully designed clamshell box, My Own Private Riot includes extensive sleeve notes by respected journalist Daryl Easlea (Record Collector), providing fresh insight into this important phase of Gilmore’s artistry. From stripped-back acoustic reflections to richly layered pop and folk-rock arrangements, these recordings reveal a songwriter of depth, nuance, and fearless individuality.
Thea Gilmore’s work across these years saw her expanding her audience while staying fiercely independent in her musical vision. This collection stands as the essential starting point for anyone new to her music – and a definitive archive for long-time fans.
The box set brings together: Liejacker from 2008, her eighth studio album with a new level of polish in her sound, and featuring collaborations with Joan Baez, Dave McCabe, and Erin McKeown; 2009’s Recorded Delivery, her first live album, drawing on acoustic and full-band performances from UK shows between 2006 and 2008, from the same year Strange Communion, a winter-themed album mixing new originals with covers of Yoko Ono and Elvis Costello; 2011’s Nigel Stonier produced John Wesley Harding wherein she reinterpreted Bob Dylan’s seminal 1967 album; 2013’s Regardless, her critically acclaimed return that earned mainstream recognition and BBC Radio 2 support, reaching the UK Top 40 and 2015’s Ghosts And Graffiti, her part-retrospective, part-new album featuring four new songs and rerecorded favourites from across her back catalogue.
