Currently on tour in the UK, and following the release of her latest album, Smell The Roses, award-winning Finnish guitarist and blues artist Erja Lyytinen has a new single out entitled ‘Abyss’.
Described as her heaviest track to date, the guitar-driven single features two guitar solos alongside some melancholic lyrics that carry you throughout this rather epic, over seven minutes long, track. The music video was shot inside of a rock, in a secret location, to capture the dark and gloomy feel of the number.
“’Abyss’ is my favourite track on the new album,” said Lyytinen. “I feel it’s one of the strongest songs I have ever written. The lyrics are simple, yet quite melancholic, pointing out the feeling when you just keep on falling, deeper and deeper into the shadows and darkness. I wrote two guitar solos for this song. I remember practicing my fingers off for the diminished licks on the latter solo.
“I wanted to express that feeling of being alone in the dark,” she continued. “There’s no way out. You’ve been left to carry all the burden by yourself. That’s a heavy feeling, and you can really feel that on the song. This will be a heavy and loud track to perform on stage!”
’Abyss’ sees Erja Lyytinen returning to both the progressive rock and heavy metal elements she’s dallied with on previous album releases, marrying both formats and delivering a potent number with a suitably gothic atmosphere.
