Bristol’s feral blues-infused punk outfit Mother Vulture have been turning the heads of the mass in the UK underground scene for a number of years. Now they finally unleash their highly anticipated debut album Mother Knows Best. With a festival run that covered ArcTangent, Bloodstock and Leopalooza, Mother Vulture have unleashed their high-octane performances on unsuspecting audiences everywhere, leaving them craving more. With pulsating riffs, chaotic drums, soaring vocals and thunderous bass, Mother Knows Best has absolutely everything that you need to satiate all your rock needs.
Clocking in at 35 minutes, Mother Knows Best is a white knuckle ride from start to finish, incredibly punchy with an unrelenting pace that gives you the urgent need to get up and start going crazy. Mother Vulture definitely know how to write big and catchy riffs, countless earworms are found squirming through this album, accompanied by plenty of grooves that’ll make you pull the “oooff that’s good” face multiple times. The Bristol quartet must also have had a course in ballistics given how explosive the album is. Whether it be all out punk chaos or half time stoner rock grooves, Mother Vulture know how to create powerful, venomous riffs and rhythms with all the velocity and violence of a snarling and snapping beast. This innate ability to write visceral and emotive songs, seemingly effortlessly, is something to be admired.
There is something wonderfully old school about Mother Vulture, oozing old school attitude but with the new school knowledge and sensibilities, they’re here to entertain you with everything they’ve got. Leaving nothing on the stage Mother Knows Best is a vivid, enthralling and anthemic. Its opening track ‘Fame Or Shame’ kicking off the party, you can feel the chaotic and frantic energy that the band have as it pummels the cones of your speakers. One of the stand out songs is ‘Rabbit Hole’, its ridiculously catchy hook will no doubt live in your head rent free, if the riff hasn’t drilled it into your skull first. The boogie groove on ‘Mr. Jones’ will get you moving, with visceral vocals and ever shifting dynamics this song is hypnotic.
Mother Vulture are like Michelin star chefs, only using the finest musical ingredients to create a devilishly tasty dish of blues infused punk. Demonstrating a maturity and cohesion beyond their years, Mother Knows Best is an incredibly tight and punchy album that perfectly captures the band’s raw, ball-busting, skull-splitting, speaker-destroying energy. An emphatic debut that has been well worth the wait.
