Anders Buaas is a guitarist, composer, and producer from Larvik, Norway. He has played with many Norwegian bands, worked as a producer, and served as a touring guitarist for Paul DiAnno (Iron Maiden) and Tim Ripper Owens (Judas Priest). He created his solo project in 2017 and has released several albums, including a trilogy titled The Witches of Finnmark, which was released in 2017, 2018, and 2019.
His new album, Trollringen, was released on 6th June 2025 and was inspired by Norwegian author Sigurd Hoel’s novel of the same name. It is a historical saga, murder mystery, and domestic tragedy. The album consists of ten songs, four of which include vocals; this marks his first album featuring vocals. All the songs were written between 2019 and 2025. Although he did not have a specific concept in mind, the songs fit well within the narrative of the story. Anders wants listeners to connect the dots throughout the album. Additionally, it is worth mentioning that this release features a live string section—a first for him—as well as the use of a soprano saxophone on the title track.
“As I mainly focus on instrumental music, my main love and musical venture, I had some songs with vocals and lyrics that were unused. This was the time to fit them into an album”.
Anders Buaas
Now that you’ve learned some interesting facts about the album, let’s get on with the review! This was something different from what I have ever listened to before. I always love discovering new bands and artists, as well as listening to the ones I already love. Anders Buaas is an artist from whom I didn’t know what to expect. The soulful, harmonic vocals are filled with emotion and passion, creating many calming moments; it is very well-produced. There are some deep, darker moments, some heavier sections, and some happier upbeat moments; overall, it captures the story well—even if you don’t know it. You can imagine the narrative and how effectively it’s told through the music. It’s a mix of folk rock, jazz, and acoustic styles—not my usual taste in music—but I thoroughly enjoyed it. If you like the sound of this album, please go give it a listen!
