On The Radar: Swedish Post-Metal Trio Dimwind

Some albums are born from a place you wouldn’t wish on anyone. For Swedish post-metal trio Dimwind, their third full-length The Carrion Waltz is, in their own words, their “f*ck cancer album.” With new single ‘My Uninvited Host’ out March 13th, we sat down with drummer Jonas Eriksson to find out more.

The band describe the track’s emotional core: “My Uninvited Host is a song about the panic and despair that comes when everything you are and hold dear is threatened to be taken away from you by an enemy you don’t know how to fight.” What you get is heavy metal, pounding drums, shouty vocals, and LOADS of mixed up melody all crashing into each other. It’s a frenzy, and it’s underground metal at its finest.

Who are you and where are you from?

We are Dimwind, an alternative post-metal trio from Sweden.

How did the band form?

Me (Jonas, drums) and Andreas (guitars) started our first band in the late ’90s and have played in different constellations ever since. In 2019 we formed Dimwind as an instrumental duo and released two full-length albums before we felt the urge to add a vocal element to the music. So last year we teamed up with vocalist Misha and began tracking the new album.

How would you describe your sound to someone who’s never heard you?

Unexpected, heavy and sludgy, but also soft and melodic, with a kind of sombre melancholy as a foundation to it all.

What bands have shaped what you do?

Some bands that always come to mind are Tool, Cult of Luna, Isis and Khoma, among many others of course. For example, me and Andreas listened to some tracks from the album Kinship by Iotunn in the studio and got so inspired that we instantly wrote a song. I can highly recommend that album.

What’s the one song of yours people should hear first?

Why not start with the first song ‘The Chime’ from the new album The Carrion Waltz, and hopefully they won’t be able to stop listening. But if you read this before the album release, then the single ‘My Uninvited Host’ should get you pumped up.

Tell us an emotional story about your band?

Before Misha joined the band, while we were still searching for a vocalist, my wife was diagnosed with cancer, which turned our lives upside down. The past year has been an intense struggle, but today she is recovering and is considered cured. The uncanny twist came when Misha joined the band and we began discussing a theme for the album. I shared our situation with him, and he told me his own story: that he is a survivor of an aggressive form of blood cancer himself, and after his recovery, his wife was diagnosed with the same type now affecting my wife. Everyone is considered cured today, but the recovery, for all of us, will take a long time. So in this shared experience, the theme for the album became clear. This is our f*ck cancer album.

What’s been your best gig so far?

We are spread out over the country, so we don’t do live gigs. Me and Andreas only live an hour apart so we meet to write and record, but Misha lives on the other side of the country. And we’re only the three of us, so would need some more members anyway.

What’s the music scene like where you’re based?

Here in Gothenburg it’s alive and kicking. The scene can talk for itself. If we had the time and energy we could attend gigs every week.

Tell us the story behind one of your band’s tracks?

We originally wrote the song ‘Counterglow’ almost 20 years ago but it was never properly recorded and it never really got the treatment it deserved. Revisiting it for this album felt right, and giving it a new shape finally brought it to life in the way we always wanted. With the vocal element added it now feels really fresh for us, despite its origin. Lyric-wise, the draggy feel of the song paves the way for Misha to dive into the protagonist’s fixation on the horizon as the realisation of a long and winding, yet uncertain, road to regaining custody of one’s life hits.

Tell us about your new album?

As we touched on earlier, the album explores a very heavy theme, but we feel we’ve managed to connect that with the music in a meaningful way, which makes us really happy with the result. We’re presenting six quite different tracks with a wide range of expressions, exactly how we want it: unexpected and captivating. Ultimately, though, that’s for the listener to decide.

What’s next for you?

Right now we’re really excited about everything surrounding the release, and hopefully we’ll have a batch of CDs for sale soon. At the same time, we’re always eager to keep moving forward, and we’ve already started writing new material, which is just as exciting.

Where can people find you?

On pretty much all platforms. All links are gathered here: Linktree

Anything else you want people to know?

We simply hope The Carrion Waltz resonates with those who come across it and take the time to listen, and we really appreciate them doing so.

‘My Uninvited Host’ is out March 13th. The Carrion Waltz releases independently in April 2026.
