BABYMETAL’s Major Lazer Remix

Japanese metal icons BABYMETAL have dropped a Major Lazer remix of their single ‘from me to u ft. Poppy’, the first track revealed from the upcoming deluxe release of Metal Forth, due June 26 via Capitol Records.

It’s not often I say this, but I really do not like this remix. My ears need cleaning with some Slayer immediately. Why Major Lazer? There are so many better, and let’s be honest, heavier/alternative artists out there who could have brought something genuinely exciting to a BABYMETAL collaboration. We will never listen to this again. Just saying.

BABYMETAL have always existed in a universe of their own making, and that willingness to take risks is part of what makes them so compelling. But a collision between Japanese kawaii metal and Major Lazer’s dancehall-infused production feels like a risk that didn’t pay off. The original collaboration with Poppy worked because it stayed within touching distance of heavy. This remix doesn’t.

That said, the deluxe edition of Metal Forth will no doubt have plenty more to offer when it arrives on June 26 via Capitol Records, and we’ll reserve judgment on the full package until then. An official lyric video for the remix is available now for anyone braver than me.
