Kula Shaker are back with ‘Lucky Number‘, the final single before their new album Wormslayer drops on January 30th, and honestly? This song is just so much fun.
If you’ve not heard of the band, you might recognise ‘Govinda‘ from various film soundtracks over the years, or perhaps ‘Hey Dude‘ which popped up in EastEnders a few times back in the day. But here’s the thing, Kula Shaker in 2025 sound like a band completely reinvigorated.
‘Lucky Number‘ opens Wormslayer with a swirling psych rock stomp that feels both nostalgic and utterly fresh. It’s got those heavyweight riffs the band are known for, glam rock rhythms that get your head nodding, and Jay Darlington’s Hammond organ adding splashes of colour throughout. Frontman Crispian Mills remains as enigmatic as ever, this time pondering the universe’s patterns through car number plates. “There are two types of people in this world: those who read car number plates, and those who don’t,” he explains. “We’re not going crazy. The universe is speaking to us.”
The accompanying video features live footage from last year’s Inner Circle Shows, including their set at Liverpool’s legendary Cavern Club where they earned a brick in the Wall of Fame.
Wormslayer promises to be their most vital work since their debut album K made them platinum-selling sensations in the 90s. Early singles ‘Be Merciful‘, ‘Good Money‘, ‘Charge of the Light Brigade‘ and ‘Broke as Folk‘ suggest an album that refuses to stay in one lane, weaving between psychedelia, gothic crooning, pastoral folk and what can only be described as mantra metal.
The band celebrate the release with the Wormslayer Busking Sessions, an acoustic record store tour kicking off January 23rd in London, before a UK and European headline run with The Mad Alchemist Liquid Light Show in tow. Several dates are already sold out, so grab tickets while you can.
