Profane Burial have been keeping busy. They’ve not only released new single ‘Prognostic Augural Obsolescence’ but also a lyric video for earlier single ‘Triumph Of Dreadful Aftermath’.
Desolate Echoes Of Turmoil is considered the most elaborate and dynamic album the band have produced thus far. While the new material deliberately keeps the core foundation of their established style, leaning heavily on grandiose arrangements, bleak atmospheric textures and sharp black metal execution, it also moves significantly further into progressive territory. Complex arrangements, shifting structures and unexpected timing push the band into a modern, deeply emotional sphere without losing their characteristic dark and cinematic sound.
To get there, the band worked with some notable names in the studio. The whole album was mixed and mastered by Børge Finstad at Toproom Studio, while the drum tracks were recorded separately at Strand Studio. Visually, the release is tied together by a striking, Rorschach-inspired cover painted by Ella Kunst, a piece designed to mirror the existential and psychological tension running throughout the music.
The band began back in 2013 as an ambitious studio project between Kjetil Ytterhus, known for his work with Haimad, Khôra and Babels Tårn, and André Aaslie, who has performed with Funeral, Images At Twilight, Omnia Moritur and Vitam Aeternam. It wasn’t long before the project became a proper live group, bringing in musicians associated with prominent acts like Borknagar, Trollfest and Cadaver. After building early momentum with their 2018 debut album The Rosewater Park Legend, the band switched to a trio format after 2020. That transition put Aaslie on guitar duties alongside bass and keyboards, saw Ytterhus become the main vocalist while also playing keyboards, and resulted in 2024’s My Plateau. The triumvirate is completed by Bjørn Dugstad Rønnow on drums.
Talking about ‘Prognostic Augural Obsolescence’, the band said: “When all paths lead to the end of time, only fire, judgement, and the shadows of darkness persist. ‘Prognostic Augural Obsolescence’ is a journey through the images of Hell, self-corruption, and the timeless battle between good and evil. ‘Prognostic Augural Obsolescence’ represents a new direction in music for Profane Burial, combining complex rhythm patterns with cinematic production and dark guitar work.”
As for earlier single ‘Triumph Of Dreadful Aftermath’, the band explained that it tells the tale of how chronic insomnia and spontaneous panic tear apart the fabric of normality, dragging the human psyche into a nightmare dimension of disintegration and fear. With its ferocious style of expression, it sets the tone for what follows.
