This wonderful little gem by the talented Trine Duesund is a great addition to the varied Apollon Records roster and a brilliant piece of work that is rich in atmosphere and charged with emotion and poetic spirit.
Its beautiful content, which is superbly presented by means of a great-looking LP sporting evocative visuals that complement the meaningful song titles and lyrics nicely, is hardly what one would consider the “usual RAMzine fare” in that it is neither metal nor rock music, but open-minded listeners will find plenty to cherish here. Love, loss, moving on in life, and the hidden joys of existence are merely some of the themes that appear on the deftly executed disc, which makes it both relatable and personal. Perhaps endings and new beginnings would be one way of summing up the underlying idea that its nine reflective compositions leave one with. While ‘Avhengig‘ is the highlight of the A side, the B side is where the real diamonds are, and it somehow feels more experimental, dark and subtly brooding, as evidenced by ‘Bånsull til Anna og Knut‘, ‘Klar til å Dra‘, and ‘Glasshus‘, this scribe’s personal favourites and the record’s standout moments. The warm hue of the production only adds to its genuinely organic aura and introspective vibe.
There is a plaintive quality about these quietly resonating tunes that makes this emotive output a must, and regardless of whether you are into art pop, singer-songwriter, Americana, hook-laden jazz, or just melancholy music in general, Under Overflaten is worth your time.
