Hailing from Switzerland, Amethyst is a heavy rock band that wears the late 70s/early 80s rock influences on their sleeves while maintaining a character of their own. Formed during what the band calls ‘the year of the plague’ (2020) Frëddy —vocals, Ramon—guitar, Yves—guitar, Miguel Sanchez—bass, and Eldo—drums—released a taster EP last year, which formed the basis of their debut full-length album, Throw Down The Gauntlet.
If you love heavy rock with roots firmly planted in NWOBHM with hints of early Maiden, Angel Witch, and Priest all with twin guitars celebrating that heritage whilst adding an identity of their own, then this is for you. Take opener ‘Embers On The Loose:’ It has a new, yet nostalgic sound that is infectious and well worth a listen. ‘Stand Up and Fight’ even has a hint of Rush in its intro before a sort of Tygers feel appears and then turns into a Maiden meets Budgie mid-section… but it is still original despite those name drops. ‘Rock Knights’ brings a Lizzy twin guitar feel to the intro before we’re back on NWOBHM terra firms but with a punk injection. (I’m sure it’s my ageing ears and the lyrics aren’t “I’m a rocker, I’m sucking the night!) ‘Take Me Away’ takes us straight back to Maiden land.
The closing track, ‘Serenade (Under The Rising Moon)’, is the one to fully appreciate what this band of talented musicians are capable of. Six and a half minutes of proper rock from the 70s/80s. Riffs, time changes, galloping bass that Harris would be proud of and lots of guitar action to keep everyone happy.
OK, Amethyst aren’t breaking new ground, but their new approach to class, classic rock makes for a thoroughly enjoyable album that would sit and fit nicely in any rock lovers collection.
