Colder Suns Yesterday Is All I Want Review

Colder Suns are a four piece London based rock band whose influences are an eclectic mix, drawn from across a wide range of genres. Yesterday Is All I Want, recorded at Francis Rossi‘s Arsis studio, is their second album and builds upon the promise shown on their debut. This is a collection of nine relatively short pieces, with tracks hovering midway between punk, indie and classic rock, all played with gusto and a real sense of melody, with some fine harmonies alongside quite intricate twin guitar interplay, reminiscent of Thin Lizzy and Wishbone Ash.

They’ve built a rep for themselves as a high energy onstage band and their opening trio of tunes are as powerful an opening rock salvo as you could want. ‘Heart Attack Ready To Go’, a song about coping with the stresses and strains of modern life, starts with a fast driving intro riff which is sustained right the way through, whereas ‘Shaking Trees’ and ‘Pantomime High Five’ sees them sounding like a band who’d played at CBGB’s in the 1970s. They’re both fast pulsating indie punk rock, incorporating the vibe of the Dead Kennedys with vocalist Ben Martin channelling his inner Jello Biafra to great effect.

They keep the rock vibe going with ‘A Little More’, a song in the same vein as ‘Heart Attack’, and ‘Rusted Into Place’, both of which are fine slices of classic rock, before they veer into a more melodic form of rock with ‘Let The Bullets Fly’, which brings Thin Lizzy to mind.

But Colder Suns are also capable of subtlety, as shown on the slower, melancholic ‘My Weakness’, with its bluesy tinged guitar intro and emotive lyrics. ‘Lately’ is the most commercial track on the album and could have been played on R2 if released as a single. The album finishes with ‘Colder Suns’, which begins slow before becoming a powerful mid tempo rock song.

Yesterday Is All I Want is a fine effort from a band who’re beginning to make a name for themselves in rock circles. They’re a band who should be seen now because, if they continue to develop along these lines, you’ll be seeing them in bigger halls before too long.
