What happens when you combine ex-members from Signs of Rain, Among the Serpents and Candlemass with the desire to make sludge tinged heavy metal that sounds fresh and unique? You get Greif Collector, that’s what.
Pooling their wealth of talent and experience together, the Grief Collector projects benefits greatly. Unleashing old school, high energy heavy metal meets sludge and doom flavoured licks and riffs that sound incredible with Robert Lowe handling vocal duties.
En Delirium is a rough around the edges in all the right places, well-engineered and expertly constructed album that chugs along at a good pace, tracks interlaced with trills and licks, underpinned by galloping drums and Maiden-esque riffs. The album plays much like a Candlemass record and will obviously draw comparisons that carefully riding the balance between heavy and doomy, the record has enough ebb and flow and versatility that it works well as a serious listen or a background play.
Standout tracks have to include ‘Corridors’ which sounds like a case study of the excellent Crypt Sermon. ‘Wintersick’ with its crushing lead riff and doom pacing deserves special attention along with ‘Knee Deep In Devils’ which wouldn’t be out of place on a Sabbath record and the excellent ’10 Days (Of Disbelief)’ which manages to sound both old school and modern at the same time, a triumph of a song and one that sets a different pace on the record.
In short, Disbelief Delirium is not an album to be slept on, there is something here that almost any metal fan can enjoy, less so if extreme metal is your bag but if you like old school metal, doom and straight hard rock then you’ll want to be checking this one out when it drops on May 14th via Napalm Records
