Live Review: Reel Big Fish & Suburban Legends, Manchester

Yet again another unforgettable night with Reel Big Fish and a fantastic support performance from Suburban Legends!

I must say that Suburban Legends left me shocked by their set, in a good way of course. Each track played was happy, with the ska feels which instantly set a brilliant mood in the room.

They played ‘High Fives’ to which everyone was clapping whilst the band are running around on stage. Vincent Walker (lead singer) jumps off stage and gives everyone in the front row a high five!

Making sure they cater for absolutely everyone in the room, Suburban Legends play a range of covers including ‘You’ve Got a Friend in Me’, ‘I kissed a Girl‘, and ‘Under The Sea’. I’m not kidding they covered ‘Under The Sea’ and it was awesome!

The rest of their set see’s the band bring light banter to the crowd. They get one of their mates Brian Klem to sing ‘Sweet Carolin’ with the crowd, – in between asking him which color underwear he is wearing.

On top of all this they played a whole range of their own material too, including newer track ‘Forever In The Friend Zone’. So ends their set and they are one of the nuttiest bands I have seen perform to date, defiantly a great choice for that Reel Big Fish support slot.

Reel Big Fish, the band we’ve been waiting for. ‘The Final Countdown’ starts to play and they come on stage strumming along to it and then suddenly open up with one of their most notorious tracks ‘Everyone Else is An Asshole’. Of course everyone goes nuts! If that wasn’t enough the next track is introduced by Billy Kottage (trumpet player) saying “Ok, everyone put your fingers on the air for ‘Another F.U Song” – this is just hilarious you can’t make this stuff up.

The crowd yell in applaud of Reel Big fish over and over. The set is comical throughout, including much band banter, and even some a monkey jig!

They do a mumbling piss take ska version everyone sings along. And then its sped up bit, and they tell the crowd “Brilliant Everyone! Cheers!”

That was flocking awesome!

Next they play ‘Sell Out’, of course everyone went nuts the final song for the night and it’s a classic to end it on. They end the show, but we all know what is coming next. The crowd chant, clap and stomp their feet for more.  The band re-appear singing “Olay olay, olya olllay”, to which the crowd certainly join in. ‘Boss DJ’ is the next track to be played, and its nice to hear the song sang repeatedly, ether this is a joke or they are crafty gits repeating the chorus again and again.

“Here’s another song about drinking” they say as they play ‘Beer’. One of the most anticipated songs of the night and the sly buggers left it till the encore. ‘Self Esteem’ is played which turns into a cross-mix with the previous song, and everyone goes nuts again, waving yelling this is it! “I see you have the skank circle going” they say as they go into ‘Take on Me’ is the grand finale.

Sadly it has come to an end but its been a brilliant night full of fun, ska and of course RBF humor. Its been brilliant especially with a nutty support act Suburban Legends. So if your looking for a fun evening you can always find that at a Reel Big Fish gig. Yet again RBF fail to disappoint and full of surprises.
