Backengrillen’s Paean to Chaos and Destruction Continues

Backengrillen, the new ensemble who share roots in hardcore, punk, noise and free jazz, has just released their second single, ‘Repeater II’, via Svart Records.

The band came together following the recent split of hardcore punk band Refused, whose members Dennis Lyxzén (Vocal and effects), Magnus Flagge (Bass) and David Sandström (Drums and electronics) have joined with Mats Gustafsson (Saxophones, flutes and live electronics) who has played with the likes of Peter Brötzmann, Jim O’Rourke, Oren Ambarchi, Zu, The Ex and Sonic Youth, to form Backengrillen – All of Backengrillen‘s members come from Umeå, in Sweden.

Backengrillen‘s music is a paean to chaos and destruction,” they declarded. “The basic idea is to take a death/doom metal, or noise-rock riff and play it until it loses meaning and then break it apart like a ravenous cat would a tiny forest mouse,” came the band announcement, but it didn’t stop there: “It’s filled to the brim with the self-hatred endemic to the province of Västerbotten from whence the member’s hail. The record was written on a Thursday during their first ever rehearsal, performed live on a Friday and recorded on a Saturday, so what you’re hearing is raw, stupid, gut instinct music played by seasoned purveyors of hardcore punk, metal, free jazz, noise et cetera.”

What they’re talking about there is the debut self-titled album that’s being released by Svart Records on 23rd January next year that will be available on vinyl, CD, and digitally.

‘Repeater II‘ and their first single, ‘A Hate Inferior’, are only available to hear via Bandcamp here.
