Mollie Marriott… A Woman Undone?

Mollie Marriott has released ‘A Woman Undone’, her first single of 2022 and a taste of what’s ahead as she makes a highly anticipated return since the release of her debut album.

On A Woman Undone, Marriott’s uninhibited, soul-filled and empowered new song may sound like your typical unrequited love story but it is in fact about childhood abuse and rejection from family. Using this backdrop, Marriott not only sings about an experience that is shared amongst so many who have been impacted by these issues, but is touching on a deeply personal subject never before heard in her music.

A slight departure from her usual grungy blues sound, Mollie found inspiration and comfort in the production styles of Trent Reznor, Depeche Mode and St Vincent‘s dark melodic synths, taking the concept to Sam Tanner (who Marriott worked closely with on her debut album, Truth Is A Wolf) to start working on the writing and production of the song in 2020.

Explaining her approach to the new material she noted:

“When it came to writing the new material, Pretty Hate Machine was an album that came screaming back to me having laid dormant for some time in my brain’s catalogue. I just love that almost disturbing synth sound and the sexy edge the production brings. It’s pure filth.

“I also wanted my sound to evolve like I have since Truth Is A Wolf but as much as I will always want to move forward, I didn’t want to make such a jump that I didn’t recognise myself in my music. I think I’m always going to take those big backing vocals with me wherever I go and because of that, En Vogue’s ‘Free Your Mind’ was an inspiring reference point with this track.”
