One of the most electrifying guitarists of her generation, and “a genuine force of sonic prowess” according to Rolling Stone Magazine, Samantha Fish’s Paper Doll album is out now via Rounder Records.
Following her Stateside national TV debut performance on The Kelly Clarkson Show where she performed ‘Lose You’ it’s out now as single, with a video you can check out here at RAMzine.
Steeped in fiery conviction and hard-won assurance, ‘Lose You’ features a blazing guitar solo, “sizzling slide escapades” according to Premier Guitar, and beguiling harmonies.
“It’s a song about taking control and calling the shots in a relationship,” said Fish. “It’s my way of saying, ‘I’m on fire and you’re not, so what are you gonna do about it?’”
Samantha Fish’s ‘Lose You’ keeps the listener hooked. This slinky grooved tune with a little light boogie on the side, is a subtle come-on that may get your feet tapping sooner than you’d thought.
‘I’m Done Runnin’ was Fish’s previous single. Mid-paced and sassy, picking up the beat with a nuanced riff and back-slamming slide, Samantha Fish’s new single might be catchy, but it’s the lyricisms of ‘I’m Done Runnin’’and the deliberate tone of her voice in issuing those words that makes this stand out.
An exhilarating statement of self-reliance and unshakable confidence, Fish brings her signature flair to the new song. “When I look in the mirror, staring at the unknown, the world’s not getting clearer, but I like where I’m goin,’” she sings on the track, explaining: “It’s about pushing forward even when life knocks you down, because you know what you want.”
It’s this vibrant, unapologetic energy that the Kansas City-bred, New Orleans-based musician is said to bringing each song on Paper Doll, delivered with visceral force, soul-soothing empathy, and newfound clarity. “It’s taken me years to finally find my voice in a studio setting,” Fish admitted. “But with this record, I took everything I had and slammed it right on the table.”
Tracked in Austin at The Orb and Los Angeles at Savannah Studios, the nine song collection was recorded amid Fish’s gruelling touring schedule, ultimately capturing the untamed energy of her live performances. “I’d never made a record on the road like that,” Fish revealed. “Even though it was so intense, it felt good to keep up the momentum from the live show. It helped us make an album that’s got a real living, breathing pulse to it.”
Paper Doll has been produced by Detroit garage-rock legend Bobby Harlow (The Go) – with assistance from fellow Detroit luminary Mick Collins (The Gories) on one track – and features touring bandmates Ron Johnson (bass), Jamie Douglass (drums), and Mickey Finn (keys).
