Manchester-based psychedelic throwback peddlers The Slow Day have returned from a five-year hiatus and revealed a brand new single, ‘Antidote’.
The track feels like a blending of ’70s psychedelic-adjacent rock bands like Blue Öyster Cult and Deep Purple with a bit of ’80s punk added in for flavour. The omnipresent wah effects help give it that retro feel, and the reverb-laden vocals intentionally date it to a place in time. It’s a glorious anachronism that doesn’t overindulge in nostalgia but does come from a very different era.
Manchester has its own storied history and place in music history and continues to have plenty of innovations, but what is most impressive about bands like The Slow Day is that they take plenty of influence from older bands without being mired by nostalgia or a desire to replicate the past 1:1.
Five years is a long time for a hiatus, and you can tell that The Slow Day are rejuvenated after their break. Hopefully, even more killer tracks are in their future. ‘Antidote’ drops on 2nd February 2026.
