Trivium will release their eleventh album, Crown In The Grave, on 20 November through Roadrunner Records. They’ve also shared the title track, along with a video inspired by Japanese Noh theatre.
The title track builds from layered riffs into an explosive wall of metal: galloping riffs, big solos and battering-ram drums, tied together with three-tiered vocals. The post-apocalyptic video, directed by Pavel Trebukhin, is set in a smoke-filled dojo and draws on the band’s long love of Japanese theatre and martial arts.
The whole record grew out of Akira Kurosawa’s Throne Of Blood, his take on Macbeth set in feudal Japan. “That influence grew into this darker, ghostly atmosphere that became a set of guardrails for the music, lyrics, artwork, and overall identity of the record,” explains bassist Paolo Gregoletto. “I think when you hear it, it’ll somehow feel both new and like a return.”
It’s the first Trivium album made in the band’s own studio, The Hangar in Orlando, and the first with drummer Alex Rüdinger, who nearly joined back in 2015. Josh Wilbur produced again, and Jacob Hansen mixed. The band say they looked to ’90s classics like Metallica‘s The Black Album, Megadeth‘s Countdown To Extinction and Soundgarden‘s Superunknown, chasing big riffs and even bigger choruses.
For Matt Heafy, it’s been a personal journey too. “Facing yourself is the final quest,” he says. “I stopped trying to be safe and perfect at every show. Instead, I was actually enjoying the experience and living. With all of the changes Trivium went through, it’s like a brand new band.”
The tracklist is ‘Jorōgumo’, ‘Crown In The Grave’, ‘Dead Inside Of Me’, ‘The Terror’, ‘The Haunting Never Ends’, ‘Lie Of It All’, ‘Blackout The Dawn’, ‘Paradise Of Sinners’, ‘Death Throes’, ‘The Agony’, ‘Devour Your Dreams’ and ‘Serpent In The Flame’.
In spring 2027, Trivium head out on a huge European arena tour with In Flames, with Paleface Swiss and VOLA supporting. In the UK and Ireland, Trivium headline with In Flames as special guests:
29 March: Dublin, 3Arena
31 March: Glasgow, OVO Hydro
2 April: Manchester, Co-op Live
3 April: London, Alexandra Palace
4 April: Cardiff, Utilita Arena
We’re hooked on the Kurosawa concept, and the ’90s-style chorus-first approach could make this one of Trivium‘s most memorable records. Add In Flames at Ally Pally and spring 2027 can’t come soon enough.
