Five years since their last album, Norwegian heavy metal act Vreid return with a new single, ‘From These Woods’, taken from a new album, The Skies Turn Black, that’s due out on 6th March.
“This album pushed us to our limits, but it reminded us why we still do this,” said the band, now thirty years into their career. “The fire is still there, stronger than ever.”
‘From These Woods’ began to take form during early demo sessions in a remote mountain cabin. A late-night idea quickly became the foundation for the track and set the tone for the entire album.
The music video for ‘From These Woods’ extends the song’s musical scope capturing the vastness and darkness of their Norwegian landscape.
The Skies Turn Black finds Vreid reshaped, challenged, and sharpened with confidence while holding onto their sognametal sound, a term originated by Windir whereby melodic black metal and folk influences co-exist.
Described as as one of the most demanding, yet rewarding, processes in their history as a band, The Skies Turn Black, produced by Anders Nordengen, and featuring artwork by Kim Holm, began with inspiration but shifted into a difficult period where communication and direction faltered. Through persistence and recalibration, the band emerged with eleven songs that are said to reflect both their struggle and artistic renewal.
In 2026, Vreid will join Hypocrisy, Abbath and Vomitory for a major European tour.
