PENGSHUi are a newer formation, but the men in the makeup of this trio are veteran composers with cultivated roots in a variety of genres. After a string of stand-out singles, the boys are ready to unleash a proper release onto the scene with their debut, self-titled album.
This record is a bass driven, visceral force of attitude employing a brutal brand of punk with the sharp vocals akin to grime. ‘Opener Wicked Ones’ unleashes a hurricane of loud and enveloping bass that continues throughout each track. ‘Wiseman’ is a stand out; an earworm of a chorus that will surely lead to a sing-along set piece in a live environment. Lead single ‘No Joke’ is a fun and fast song.
The album benefits from a couple of interludes showcasing the breadth of styles applicable to PENGSHUi’s sound. Otherwise each song relies on a relentless adrenaline bolstered by the eminently macho tone. As much as there is ever present fusion there is contrast at times, but ultimately this record will likely contain something that strikes a chord with most musical palates.
PENGSHUi is truly sonic journey across a multitude of styles in the vein of all the great genre-busters. Fans of Enter Shikari and Rage Against the Machine will find something to enjoy in this.
PENGSHUi will tour in March with Kid Brooke, check out the dates below. PENGSHUi will be released February 21st on MVKA Records. Also check out the new video for Wiseman!
