Toxic Positivity takes us on a rollercoaster of emotions, brought to us by The Used.
The first song, ‘The Worst (Worst I’ve Ever Been),’ sets a lively tone and offers a glimpse into The Used’s current sound. It blends electronic elements with intense riffs, breakdowns, and recitation-style lyrics. The track speaks to those who feel hopeless in the face of an unrelenting world that seems destined for destruction – “nobody can stop this wicked world from burning” they sing.
‘Numb’ is a continuation of a desolate mood and questioning of emotional detachment with the lyrics “does anyone else feel numb?” and on the next track ‘I Hate Everybody’ many will surely relate. However, it’s important not to interpret these instances of negativity as detracting from the quality of the album. Sometimes we all require something that empathises with us, and this particular album could fulfil that need for many individuals. Additionally, don’t be fooled into thinking that the sound is solely melancholic – in fact, it’s quite lively.
The track ‘Pinky Swear’ serves as the cry for help, while ‘Headspace’ represents the moment of clarity. ‘Cherry’ signifies acceptance and ‘Dopamine’ has a mischievous yet fun vibe. The emo goodness continues with the anthem, ‘Dancing with a Brick Wall,’ which showcases how emo music has evolved to incorporate various sounds taken from other genres and a bigger scope of vocal ranges nowadays.
The ballad ‘House of Sand’ exudes hope through its poetic melody, but the lyrics tell a different story. The album concludes with ‘Giving Up,’ which has an upbeat tempo but is accompanied by heavy hearted lyrics. Throughout this record, Bert McCracken lays bare his insecurities and various degrees of sanity. He wears his heart on his sleeve through his music, making this one of The Used’s most candid albums to date.
