Seattle has a storied musical history. From the arena rock bombast of the Wilson sisters and Heart to the birthplace of grunge and leading alternative label Sub Pop Records. The city is also the birthplace of snot nosed punk rockers Baby And The Nobodies, and the band has just released ‘Bombs Away’, the first single from their forthcoming Ready or Not album, due late May through F-Bomb Records.
With eight tracks of “melodic mayhem” promised, Ready Or Not has been described as “the perfect album to get you off your ass and up to the bar to kick off the New Year correctly.”
The band – featuring Rebecca Terry (Vocals), Rev James (Guitar, backing vocals, piano), Tyler Sweet – Guitar, backing vocals), Kenny James (Bass, backing vocals), Dana Sims (Drums, backing vocals) – entered Seattle’s legendary London Bridge Studio (Home to records by the likes of Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Mother Love Bone and Queensryche) and helmed by Jonathan Plum (Alice in Chains, Ann Wilson, Candlebox), the quintet, although endearingly rough around the edges, apparently “aimed for sonic perfection… and achieved it”.
Collectively, the band said, “Jonathan is great to work with, he puts up with Rev and Rebecca’s creative differences and brings both of their ideas to the table. He’s great at listening and understanding where an artist is coming from while still giving his creative input. “, “Jonathan has a way of taking the music, polishing it, skuffing it up and polishing it again, He gets it.”
About the new single, guitarist James said, “”Bombs Away” is about a failing relationship that neither is willing to walk away from, both parties are putting everything they have into it and it still just doesn’t work. This was actually one of the easiest songs on the album to record, it just came out naturally. I think Dana got the drums in one or two takes, the bass and basic guitar were laid down at the same time, I think we even kept some of the scratch vocal track from the live recordings. Everyone knew the parts and it flowed easily onto tape.
“It – along with five other songs from Ready Or Not – was tracked in a single day. All of us were professional, quick studies and passionate about creating. Working with Jonathan Plum as our engineer, producer and longtime friend helps quite a bit. We all had an idea of how these songs should sound in our heads, and somehow all of us ended up in the same place, which is amazing. ‘Bombs Away’ is sort of a “Screw you, I don’t need you anymore, if I ever really needed you in the first place” song. I came up with the chorus and title first, I knew it was ‘Bombs Away‘ before I really knew what ‘Bombs Away’ meant in this case. It’s like letting it all out. Here’s the truth bomb about the way you are as a human. The truth bomb about the way you have forced me to feel about you. The ultimate truth about why I am no longer interested in even knowing who or what you are because you despise me.
“One of the best things about writing songs is that you get to involve yourself in different scenarios than you would normally be involved in. When I write, I don’t really tap into my own personal feelings about anything in particular, but I definitely try to get into the feeling of the song, how the people may act and feel, figuring out what could have caused the desire to say these things to someone. As you take on and internalize all roles involved and you personalize them and feel what they would feel. Just because I might not write from my personal experiences all the time, it still becomes personal, if you can wrap your head around that whole statement.”
