Kasabian have shared ‘Superpowers’, the third single from their forthcoming ninth studio album Act III, out 4th September.
A track with a distinct G-Funk flavour, ‘Superpowers’ is a laidback, synth-driven number with smooth tones and an infectious, pop-filled chorus. “I remember hearing ‘Doggy Style’ by Snoop in my mate’s XR2, one of those tracks that makes you go ‘what?’ because you’ve never heard anything quite like it,” says frontman Serge Pizzorno. “When we recorded ‘Superpowers’ it was the first time I really felt like the sound I could hear in my head was what came out of the speakers.”
For the release, Pizzorno turned the song’s lyrics into a script and shot a series of audition tapes with acclaimed actor Stephen Graham. “Audition tapes have always fascinated me. There’s something incredible about seeing a performance in its rawest form,” he explains. “Getting to work with Stephen Graham, one of Britain’s greatest actors, was a true honour. Watching him take the songs into a completely new space brought a whole new depth and meaning to the lyrics.”
Recorded at The Sergery and Club Ralph, and produced by Pizzorno and Mark Ralph, Act III runs to ten tracks of guitar-driven, psych-infused pop plus three interludes. Their last seven albums all went straight in at Number One on the UK Official Album Chart, and this one looks forward while drawing on the visceral energy of the band’s earliest days.
Kasabian round out a busy festival year with UK appearances still to come at Leeds Festival on 27th August and Victorious Festival in Portsmouth on 30th August.
