In six track EP ‘Kick’ from three-piece Sundials, we have a splatter of new material, a clean-cut record that musically oozes a nice and steady vibe.
Although probably categorised as punk, the record does not set out to be an all out attack hard punk rock record. It’s not beastly and aggressive, and definitely sits on the softer side of punk in any case. With this being said, straight punk-rock seems to be an influence in songs such as ‘Gained a Grip‘ and opening track ‘Dealin’ which are carried along by a satisfying rhythm. It’s difficult to really lock this EP into a specific genre, it’s upbeat and melodic throughout, brash indie rock and pop-punk infused, yet at times seems laid back and casual.
Across the record the band ensure that all instruments are ever present and mix things up in terms of song structure and tempo. Although some songs seem a bit breezy, you can see how these could transcend to the gigging circuit and come to life when played live. The band hail from Virginia, USA and open the record by singing about feeling agoraphobic, it’s almost as if this new record is a two finger salute to that feeling and a drive to take them to new places.
The record is reminiscent of many different bands at the same time but categorised as ‘nerd rock’ on their Facebook page, so maybe we’ll just leave it at that. Overall it’s a pleasing record with enough hooks to keep it interesting throughout, but the tracks do not stand out as instant classics or ground-breakingly awesome. However, within it’s stomping ground it’s a solid record. There will always be room for this kind of music and it should be well received nonetheless. For a band who may have a relatively small turnout at their shows at the moment, this could certainly push them to new places.
