Polish avant-metal force Blindead 23 have released their debut album Deuterium, out worldwide via Peaceville, and via Mystic Production in Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic.
Arriving with it is ‘Immersion I‘, the second single, paired with a new video from Tomasz and Natalia Semeniuk. It is also the album’s opening track, and the band place it at the heart of the record’s concept. They describe it as a dive into “the fractured psyche of a traumatised mind”, a dialogue of inner voices caught in cycles of self-destruction and unhealthy routine, hovering on the edge of hopelessness before sinking into the darkest depths of the ocean of life.
If the name rings a bell, the band were formerly known simply as Blindead. This new incarnation is led by ex-Behemoth member Mateusz ‘Havoc’ Smierzchalski on guitars, synthesisers, piano and soundscapes, alongside guitarist, keyboardist and vocalist Roger Öjersson (ex-Katatonia), drummer Pawel ‘Pavulon’ Jaroszewicz (Vltimas, ex-Vader, ex-Decapitated) and vocalist Patryk Zwoliński. The arrangements and recording also drew in Maciej Janas (guitars, piano and backing vocals), Vinicius Nunes (bass) and Stephane Azam (synthesisers).
The reboot blends the atmosphere of early Blindead, all sludge and post-metal, with heavy riffs and mesmerising electronics, evolved into something new. Early steps after the rebirth produced the ‘Vanishing’ EP and the ‘Disposed‘ single, their first recording for Peaceville.
Deuterium was recorded and produced by David Castillo, known for his work with Opeth, Carcass and Katatonia, at Studio Gröndahl in Stockholm. The seven-track album runs ‘Immersion I‘, ‘Immersion II‘, ‘Wither‘, ‘Worst Laid Plans‘, ‘Deuterium‘, ‘Towards the Dark‘ and ‘You Are the Universe‘.
