Instrumental rock outfit Daydream Plus, featuring members of death metal band Tomb Mold, have announced their debut album Second Last Day Of Summer, due 10 July via Run For Cover Records.
The record arrives with one of the more inventive physical formats in recent memory. Alongside the standard release, the band are issuing a limited-edition companion version titled Extended Forecast, which reconstructs all twelve tracks in chiptune using authentic 8-bit audio and presses them onto a fully functional retro Nintendo cartridge. The cartridge artwork captures a single day through temperatures and times displayed on a heads-up display, with every reading accurate to 30 August 2025 in Toronto, the meteorological second-last day of summer that gives the album its name.
Musically, Daydream Plus pull from a wide and slightly unexpected pool of reference points. The album draws on video game soundtracks, energetic anime scores, Japanese jazz, math-rock, City Pop and 90s emo, threading those influences into something that prioritises melody over technical showboating. It is a playful concept on paper, but the band frame it as a serious record at heart.
Despite having only two EPs to their name, the band have already gathered early momentum, including praise from Pitchfork and live slots alongside the likes of Pelican, The Messthetics and James Brandon Lewis.
The announcement lands with a new single, ‘Speed Limit’, available to preview now. It’s an instrumental piece, and a fun listen that for us conjures up good times on a hot summer’s eve.
