‘The Road Not Taken’ is the latest single from Godslave‘s new self-titled album, available on Metalville Records.
The Godslave album comes some five years after Positive Aggressive and what’s been a difficult period, as laid bare in their documentary Hinter Der Kulisse. Through a return to their roots with the tribute album Champions, the five German musicians found their way back to each other, both as a band and as individuals.
The resulting Godslave is apparently the band’s most collaborative work, with shared discussions and collective ideas coming to fruition. Opening number ‘Reset, Rebuild, Reclaim’ makes the record’s intent apparent from the get-go, and the album spans the metal spectrum from uncompromising thrash to grand, epic melodies, all with a positive attitude.
Previous single ‘Repaid In Kind’ tackles one of the most difficult steps of all: regaining one’s own peace after others have left deep wounds. Not out of naivety. Not because what happened has been forgotten. But because hatred and revenge only give the perpetrators further power over one’s own life.
The song’s message is as uncomfortable as it is liberating: true strength isn’t shown by repaying evil with evil, but by breaking the cycle.
Back in July, ‘Square One’ put things straight about Godslave‘s intentions. While the song is about setbacks, inner demons and the fear of having lost all the progress you’ve made, its message is clear: nobody really starts from scratch again. Everything you’ve learnt along the way stays with you, even if it doesn’t feel that way at the moment. A song about hope and perseverance, something we could all use right now.
