Oceandvst – The vulnerability of pain, and expression through passion and music

One might not expect a random town in Greece to produce so many remarkable artists and bands that don’t always receive the recognition they deserve, and this particular band is one of them. Their pop punk sound draws inspiration from bands like Paramore, My Chemical Romance and other well known names we all grew up with, while still managing to stay true to their own identity and roots with every new release.

Through their tracks, they express raw emotions that are often difficult to put into words, blending heartfelt lyrics with melodic, emotionally driven soundscapes. The band have been touring across Greece and Europe for some time, and we had the chance to experience them live for the first time at Temple venue in Athens, a day after the incredible return of Metallica to Greece, almost 20 years after their last performance at Sonisphere Festival. A beautiful way to start the festival season for the Greeks.

Oceandvst‘s stage presence matched the energy of a crowd made up of long time fans who travelled from different cities to see the band, as well as new listeners discovering their music for the first time. Chrysa’s energy throughout the show was infectious and uplifting, driven by passion and a need for expression, but also an emotional vulnerability that distinguishes her as an artist and performer. Jimmy doesn’t perform in a traditional way, he builds atmosphere. His playing shifts between restraint and sudden intensity, keeping the crowd engaged and fully immersed. Evan holds everything together. His rhythm anchors the set while also pushing and distorting it when needed. There’s a chaotic harmony between the three, built on mutual respect and pure love for music. Their years of working together really show in how they tune in with each other without using words.

After the show, we also had the chance to ask the band a few questions.

What inspired you to create your latest album? How do you personally connect to it as artists?
Death Is An Open Door was created under heavy emotional circumstances. It was written while Chrysa was grieving the loss of her mother, and at the same time the band was facing uncertainty about its future. That emotional weight shaped the entire record. The ideas we needed to express were deeply personal and sometimes existential, creating an overall introspective tone. When the album was finally completed, it meant something slightly different to each of us.”

What’s your favourite song from the album and why?
“We can all agree on ‘My Last Day on Earth’. It feels like the most direct track and the one closest to our roots, which makes it feel very familiar and comforting every time we play it.”

What makes your band stand out from others?
“Honestly, who really knows. What matters most to us is being authentic and intense, to show raw feelings and tell honest stories. Some people see themselves in these songs and feel less alone because of it.”

How do you see the band’s future?
“Right now, we’re really proud of our fans and the way they connect with what we’re creating. We want to grow this into a community where everyone feels part of it. That means new music, and new artistic and personal explorations.”
