Review: Unaussprechlichen Kulten – Baphomet Pan Shub Niggurath

Genre: Death Metal

Established as a band in 1999 in Santiago, Chile, it is conceptually and spiritually focused on exploring and experiencing the dark side of life and death, abiding by the commands revealed and dictated by The Old Ones, in ideological alliance with the literary legacy of American writer, Howard Phillip Lovecraft. Musically and Artistically, it is devoted to keeping alive the black flame of METAL, much as its predecessors INCANTATION, SHUB NIGGURATH, IMMOLATION, PENTAGRAM, MORBID ANGEL (old), MORTA SKULD, DISMEMBER, SADISTIC INTENT, DEMIGOD (old), MORTEM, and so on.

UNAUSSPRECHLICHEN KULTEN is not a band that cuts “records” no, they construe a whole concept: the will of preservation and tradition of the nameless, ancient, superstitious and underground cult consolidated under the “Occult Death Metal” concept.

On looking at the name of the band from one who has studied the German language would naturally think this band were indeed German, however, on closer inspection – they are not! They are in fact from Chile and their long mouthful of a name originates from Cthulhu and means (Unspeakable) Nameless Cults or the Black Book.

For those interested in finding out more about the Cthulhu Mythos check out the Unaussprechlichen Kulten Wikipedia page,  which says it is also the name of a death metal band from Chile; the lyrics of many of their songs reference the Cthulhu Mythos.

So now we have slightly more to go on – you can bet this isn’t going to be just ‘plain sailing’. Here is out track-by-track review of their most recent album ‘Baphomet Pan Shub Niggurath’.

Prologue

Takes a challenging stride into some eerie ambience that whisks you off to a strange universe. It holds some progressive moments and the unusual seething vocals that are so deep are just about audible to the human ear.

The Hooded Baphomet Bleated

This is a lot more ‘In the comfort zone’ and produces a tirade of blast beats and blistering riffs which are full bodied and allure the senses with a somewhat blackened palette.Unaussprechlichen Kulten

La Recta Provincia

Tempered with a heavy flank of guitar and of course the low toned growls that gnaws vehemently on the senses. It indeed rewards and leaves one satisfied.

Yogge-Sothothe

Relating to the cosmic entity in the fictional Cthulhu Myth from H.P. Lovecraft – at least, that is what I think the title relates to, although I could be wrong. However the spiny tendrils reach out and wind themselves around the aural with utter menace that is both captivating and ferocious.

Ceremony of Belial

This is pulverising in every sense of the word with the kick beats blasting like a machine gun and driven by spiteful guitar riffs and heavy bass. Its unrelenting tones are dark and menacing – what is unleashed is a rapacious monster.

Kadath in the Cold Waste

Another fiendish and hellacious track that explores more than just the dark side. It leans towards black but the vocals guide it towards death. It has a barbed fury attached to it that threatens with a thrilling encounter of malice.

Nomen Mysticum

A brawl beyond death hosting a twist of dark imagination that drags with it mighty roars and powerful magnetic rhythms, pushing hard their boundaries. Extremely addictive!

Spirals of Acrid Smoke

Yet another brawling mass of contempt from UNAUSSPRECHLICHEN KULTEN. It ignites with blast beats with their grip only tightening. Roaming with hostile predatory stance this is fiendishly fiery.

Epilogue

Quite a doom laden finish on this track. It meanders and drifts in its dramatic guise to embrace. Holding a keen, angry and enthusiastic attitude until it finally diminishes.

Despite being under a death metal genre there are clear signs that black metal also plays a big part in UNAUSSPRECHLICHEN KULTEN. It pulls you one way and then pushes you the next so not as predictable as first thought.

There is definitely a dark presence that can be experienced within the album as it interweaves a certain demonic tendency helped along by its death metal partner and demands your attention.

It doesn’t exactly do anything new as such but it still has the power to make you focus on its demands, which is a good sign. Fifteen years is a long time for any band to write music and these guys know where their towel is at – so to speak and have treated their fans to a strong outpouring of raw emotions laced with an evil brooding that is deeply and richly satisfying.

The references to the band’s name and the title of some of the tracks push you in a dark direction of the occult and heavily influenced by H.P. Lovecraft which many will find fascinating and will no doubt spark interest from the darkest sides of the globe everywhere – more so with metal heads who also like the occult.

9½/10
