Glasgow doomgaze quartet Cwfen (pronounced “Coven”) have given their debut album two new editions.
Sorrows arrived in 2025, having grown out of demo sessions at a friend’s studio in a remote Scottish farmhouse. It went on to earn widespread acclaim and a place on 2025 album of the year lists, opening the door to tours with Paradise Lost and Faetooth and festival dates including Desertfest London and Download.
The band have now made two special versions available for the first time. The first is a digital deluxe edition of Sorrows, adding more than 40 minutes of previously unheard music: live tracks from early shows and recent touring, early demos of key songs, and the eerie sonic experiments composed while the album took shape. The second is a third edition vinyl repress on neon violet wax, limited to 300 copies. Both come through New Heavy Sounds.
Leading the deluxe edition is a live version of ‘Whispers‘, captured in Belfast on the Paradise Lost tour.
“The process of making Sorrows involved fully inhabiting the songs while recording and performing,” said bassist Mary Thomas Baker, “as well as group processes of deep listening, field recording, and experimental sound design.” She added that the deluxe edition extends all of that, running from high energy live versions and song demos to “grimy dictaphone recordings of early practices” and manipulated field recordings captured in the eerie surroundings of Deep Storm Studios.
The live material spans three years of the band. The two cuts are ‘Bodies‘, from their second ever show at Glasgow’s Core Festival in 2023, and ‘Whispers‘, from Belfast in March 2026 on the road with Paradise Lost. “We loved hearing the difference three years made, and thought others would too,” said guitarist Guy de Nuit. “We have always been a band that prioritises our live show, and we think these capture that journey.”
Cwfen play Core Festival in Glasgow on Sunday 15th November.
