Godslave has issued their latest single, and it’s ‘Rain’, a cover of Swiss band Samael.
Bassist Mika was always fascinated by the Samael because they were so “different”. He was particularly impressed by ‘Rain’ and while Godslave covering it might be seen as an unexpected choice, it’s been described as “a bombastic result” where singer Thommy puts his own stamp on the whole thing and Manni’s versatile leads are said to provide the icing on the cake. What a stunner!
2024 has been a special year for the guys from Godslave. The Saarbrücken, West German thrash band is celebrating their 15th birthday, one that almost didn’t happen and in their own documentary Hinter Der Kulisse – Ein Blick In Die Seele Einer Metalband, that translates as “Behind the scenes – A look into the soul of a metal band”.
Described as a relentlessly honest look at the people behind the metal band, discussing when the common dream, for which you have bled so much, threatens to fail – what do you do then? The documentary takes you behind the scenes of the Godslave and shows what otherwise remains hidden: the people behind the musicians, who are happy, who suffer, who can no longer but still want to! A documentary deliberately without glitz and glamour – about brotherhood and humanity.
This documentary is a vehement statement in favour of an empathetic approach to mental health in the metal scene – the five musicians lay their souls and their vulnerability on the table for all to see. Only within the band they were often not so open with each other and that almost cost them their common dream.
Godslave‘s intention is to make a contribution to metal musicians being more open with each other and thus being able to maintain their shared passion – with a lot of joy in the music and the community. At the same time, the band also show all fans the struggles that have to be fought behind the scenes to make a CD or a show possible in the first place.
You can check out the documentary here at RAMzine while further information on what Godslave will be releasing as part of their birthday celebrations can also be found here.
The new single follows ‘To The Rats’, a Trivium cover, both released via Metalville Records.
Guitarist Manni apparently took inspiration from Trivium‘s ‘The Crusade’ and toiled to master Matt Heafy’s style – the result? A cover that almost sounds like a Godslave original. For fans of brute thrash and true metal tributes, ‘To the Rats’ is available digitally and you can check out the video below.
Godslave‘s single and official video before that was ‘Thrash ‘Till Death’. It’s a Destruction cover song wherein Godslave’s intention is to take their hats off to their role models and friends from that band. The track is taken from their forthcoming Champions due from Metalville Records and the first of several singles being served up as a constant stream of little gifts to themselves and their listeners right through to February 2025.
