Following his Chance Worth Taking album, released this spring on KTBA Records, Marc Broussard has also issued a series of singles, each featuring Joe Bonamassa on guitar.
The latest single and video was for the fiery number ‘You’ll Be Sorry’, featuring both Joe Bonamassa and Josh Smith. “We wrote that one in the studio. Joe inspired the concept, and later, I went back to craft the lyrics. I wanted to flex my lyrical and melodic chops,” said Broussard.
Prior to that came the double single ‘I’m Going Home’ / ‘Trying To Do Right’, with Bonamassa’s masterful fretwork again complementing Broussard’s signature vocal grit and emotive songwriting, on what is his first blues orientated album of self-penned numbers.
“‘I’m Going Home’ is one of those songs that speaks to my undying love for my beautiful wife,” Broussard explained. “I’d die without her. I wouldn’t even have the will to continue living. Joe played his butt off at every turn, which probably speaks to his love affair with the guitar.”
‘You’ll Be Sorry’ is goodtime barrelhouse boogie with feisty slide guitar. Dance grooving, with a funk lilt in the horns, is the smooth ride that is ‘I’m Going Home’, with Marc Broussard’s voice rising to the occasion, velvet smooth one minute, gruff and rasping the next. Peppered by Joe Bonamassa’s tempered weeping guitar over a gentle soul bumping rhythm, ‘Trying To Do Right’ extends Broussard’s lyrical philosophy while continuing to impress vocally.
“‘Trying To Do Right’ came in a flurry,” recalled Broussard. “I had to harken back to the earliest days of my relationship with my wife. I wasn’t always a good boyfriend. In fact, I was a terrible one in those early days. The regret is somewhat softened by the knowledge that I can draw on those memories for inspiration in my writing. Thanks to Joe for providing the added emotional emphasis.”
Both songs on the double single were co-written by Broussard and Calvin Turner, with the recording beginning when Turner sent him the instrumentals. Broussard explained, “These songs were both part of the initial batch Calvin and I wrote, which came together over three days in a bit of a writing frenzy. Calvin came up with the hook and arrangement for ‘Right’, and like a good hunting dog, once I’m onto a scent, I’m gonna find it. I was a madman who couldn’t resist the pull of the writer’s room from sunup to sundown.”
