Death doom outfit The Crawling have released a haunting video for ‘Bound To The Negative (Requiem)’, the closing track on their new EP What We Leave Behind, out now via Grindscene Records.
The song first appeared on their album All Of This For Nothing. It has been completely transformed into an acoustic piece, with clean vocals throughout. Guitarist and vocalist Andy Clarke says the idea arrived by accident.
“I received an acoustic guitar as a present, and initially wasn’t really sure what to do with it,” he explains. “Almost immediately, I started playing ‘Bound To The Negative’, and it really lent itself to the acoustic arrangement. I recorded a version, didn’t let anyone hear it, and it sat there for about a year.”
The EP’s theme of nostalgia made it the right moment to bring the song back. “We were looking back at a song we already knew, but rewriting and reinterpreting it, much like we do with our own memories,” Clarke adds. “There’s nowhere to hide without the death metal vocals, and it feels incredibly exposed. But we wanted to do it, so we did.”
Clarke and bassist Adrien Crozet shot the video around midnight, with limited lighting and only about twenty minutes of battery power. “I think it captures the loneliness of looking back on things,” he says. “No one knows how you see the past.”
The band take What We Leave Behind on the road, finishing with an appearance at the Bloodstock Winter Gathering.
