K’MONO – Mind out of Mind

K’mono hail from Minneapolis and specialises in what I can only term playful, engrossing, and energetic prog rock with more light and shade to it than I can possibly sum up in just a few sentences.

In many ways, this stately output titled Mind out of Mind is one of those forward-thinking, eclectic, and unique-sounding works of stunning musical prowess where one can only sit back and marvel at how deftly composed and diverse the record and everything contained within its grooves is. It captures beauty, longing, melancholy, and that indefinable vibe that feels life-affirming for some strange yet charming reason. Is it just me or does parts of it leave you feeling both entertained and profoundly touched at the same time?

Wide in scope and dramatic yet also imbued with a quirky sense of humour and wit, its seven sprawling tracks move effortlessly back and forth between emotionally packed passages and outright uplifting ones; always in an inspired and confident manner. Although it does lean slightly towards that earthy atmosphere that the early incarnations of King Crimson often conjured up, the melodies occasionally make me think of the classic Mirage LP by Camel, but K’mono sounds like no other act out there. Above all, Mind out of Mind is a staggeringly brilliant offering that comes across as original and utterly enjoyable, and it is perfectly accessible and intriguing with plenty of heart to it. Did I also mention that it weaves a few psychedelic elements and ideas into its intricate textures of sound in an elegant and sophisticated manner?

A future prog classic is born, and I am loving every little second of this seventies-flavoured gem. This one comes highly recommended as it is bound to thrill the open-minded listeners out there.
