I am going to stop being sent these soon; most of my reviews seem to have some kind of negative undertones. Sometimes they are just blaring overtones mixed with a dash of compliment. A compliment sandwich they are not. With that in mind here goes for Viva La Revolution… they wrote a song about Zooey Deschanel, however its never going to go on the list of great songs about girls… and I can’t think of anything else positive to say to complete the sandwich. It’s a bit more of a compliment cheese and cracker, where everyone would just prefer the cheese.
Enough with the workplace management crap. Viva La Revolution remind me of the band you’re first in when you a, learn to play guitar b, listen to Green Day. California Skies grates on the soul thanks to the pathetic, and for the love of all that is good and holy I hope this is, put on vocal drawl that seemed to be part of every punk bands arsenal back in 1977. It may be that I’ve become old and jaded over the last 12 years of going to shows and seeing the same thing way too much.
Looking into the influences on their Facebook page it becomes pretty apparent that they aren’t at the stage yet where they’ll be creating their own sound. Blink 182 and (of course) Green Day are high on the list of influences and from personal experience Halesown is never going to be considered the musical capital of the world. Rather than sticking to the negative though I’m looking at the positive, for a debut release it has some good hooks, and after a few listens I do find myself humming along. There is definite room for progress, so lets just see if there is indeed a revolution to be had. Just please leave Zooey alone….
