Calva Louise & La Corriente

Currently seeing out their headline UK tour, Calva Louise has a brand new video out to accompany their latest single, ‘La Corriente’, out now on Mascot Records.

Talking about the music video the band said, “‘La Corriente’ is indirectly part of the sequel of ‘Under The Skin’, as the beginning of the prequel takes place in 1994: the day a young Jonnie had to agree to become an apprentice to a commander coming from the Fractalworld.

‘La Corriente’ takes place at the show where his fate is sealed, setting the tone of the story that will be unfolding in the next video. We are very grateful to everyone who took part in the video, especially Sunbird Records bar in Darwen that allowed us to shoot those two music videos in 4 days at their venue. It was a hard but fulfilling experience especially for Jess as she is directing and editing the videos.”

The single has already picked up support from BBC Radio 1. “’La Corriente’ is about escaping prefabricated opinions and judgments, affecting our perception of self,” Jess Allanic explained. Translated to “the current”, in Spanish it can mean the river current but also figuratively it can mean following someone’s flow. Allanic added, “By trying to be agreeable and trying to fit in, I let someone’s current drag me away from my own self in the past, undermining my opinions and eventually feeling trapped in expressing myself. This song for me is regaining that power back.”

British-based but truly international with its members hailing from across the globe, Calva Louise has been ripping through the U.K. underground for the past few years, driven by the creative vision of Venezuelan born Jess Allanic (Vocals, guitar, keyboard) along with French born Alizon Taho (Bass, backing vocals) and New Zealander Ben Parker (Drumsm backing vocals).

BBC Radio 1’s Alyx Holcombe declared them one of the “Artists you need to know in 2024”. They’ve picked up airplay on BBC. Radio 1,  6 Music, and Radio X. Metal Hammer highlighted them as a band proving that metalcore is back and more diverse and exciting than ever, hailing their “obnoxious guitar licks with hellish screams.”

The aforementioned previous single, ‘Under the Skin’, was co-written by Allanic and Pendulum‘s Gareth McGrillen and is a mesmerising blend of raging metal riffs, swirling electronica, with vocals that flit between ethereal vocals and demonic howls. Thematically, it follows a complex sci-fi narrative and is the introduction of a conceptual storyline about the characters and their counterparts called the Doubles.

Talking about the song, Allanic said, “The lyrics deal with the obstacles that arise between them as one is looking for freedom and the other is looking to perpetuate their consciousness, but the expectations are not the same for both sides.”

The video is a feast for the eye and was directed and edited with VFX by Jess Allanic. It is an extraordinary cinematic sci-fi video telling a story about parallel dimensions where the characters are looking to perpetuate their consciousness beyond the real world. Having built a reputation on the live circuit, with sold-out shows across the UK, 2023’s Over The Threshold album proved a breakthrough moment, coming off of the back of a headline performance on the BBC Introducing Stage at Reading and Leeds festival along with tours with the likes of Cassyette, Highly Suspect, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, Death Valley Girls, plus performances at Riot Fest and SXSW in the USA.

The music videos form part of a larger science-fiction project that guides the lore behind the songs, providing an immersive experience for the audience. The concept of duality means the existence of two sides within the human experience: the avatars or Travellers fighting like third class citizen to reach the energetic source of their willpower: the Doubles.

On their signing to Mascot Records, the band said, “We are honoured to be part of the Mascot family, and with their help, we hope to keep developing a high level of immeasurable value for the distribution and promotion of our music around the world through a unique sound for our next album and for our live shows.”
