Brazilian melodic rockers Landfall‘s new album, Wide Open Sky is out now, as is new single and video ‘Tree Of Life’ taken from the album.
Vocalist Gui Oliver commented on the track, saying: “Where did we come from, where do we go from here? These are questions that I always had in my mind. We turned all these questions about begging until the end of our lives into a song. We praise the ties of blood that connect us to our past, our family and the legacy we will let to the future world.”
“’Tree Of Life’ opens the album and was also the first one we wrote,” said drummer Felipe Souzza. “When I came up with the idea for the intro’s theme, I wanted it to have a cinematic feel – a really big opening with the theme cycling around. We aimed to craft the track that would serve as the perfect album opener. The song is very open and emotional in terms of music and lyrics. It’s full of movement, dynamics, and slightly different moods. I truly believe ‘Tree of Life’ is one of the best songs we’ve ever created”.

Hailing from Curitiba in Brazil, Landfall was originally formed by drummer Felipe Souzza and guitarist Marcelo Gelbcke, childhood friends who have been playing together since they were about 15 years old. Some years later, bassist Thiago Forbeci joined up with them and added new musical input and influences, at which point the band decided to go in a new direction.
During this period, they released three independent albums under the name Wild Child, performing several concerts around Brazil, including opening for acts such as Glenn Hughes and Mike Vescera; until 2017 when the former Auras singer Gui Oliver, joined the band and Landfall began writing songs that would eventually become their first album released by Frontiers Records, The Turning Point.
As a songwriter, Oliver had previously written songs for several artists from the label, including Jimi Jamison, Bobby Kimball, Fergie Frederiksen, and Issa. The music of the band, now featuring bassist Luis Rocha, is best described as falling somewhere between classic melodic rock, à la Journey, and slightly heavier influences, such as classic era Dokken, White Lion, and Extreme.
The following tracks are on new Wide Open Sky album: ‘Tree Of Life’, ‘SOS’, ‘When The Curtain Falls’, ‘Running In Circles’, ‘No Tomorrow’, ‘A Letter To You’, ‘Coming Home’, ‘Intoxicated’, ‘Hourglass’, ‘Higher Than The Moon’ and ‘Wide Open Sky’.

“We wanted to navigate to a more AOR vibe on this one,” he continued. “It was also inspired by the passing of the great actor Carl Weathers, paying homage to his most remarkable character: Apollo Creed. There’s a line on Rocky III that Apollo says to an unmotivated Rocky: ‘There is no tomorrow!’ We thought it would be nice to write a song about this theme – Doing everything we can do today and not leaving anything for tomorrow. A song about motivation, goals and determination.”
“’No Tomorrow’ is one of my favourite songs on the album. I believe it was a great choice for a single ‘cause at the same time it is powerful it is also a very catchy song”, added vocalist Gui Oliver.
