Newshapes have shared ‘Rescue Light’, the final track from their three-song EP Somehow I Still Believe, out now via LAB Records.
Fresh off a headline run, the Scottish four-piece have delivered their fastest and most intense track yet, a love letter to 2000s post-hardcore that wears its influences proudly. There are clear nods to Saosin and Underoath in the DNA, right down to the guitars tuned to that teenage rite of passage, drop D. A fan favourite live, it has carried that frantic energy straight into the recording.
The accompanying video, shot by CheckOneCheckTwo Media, throws you into the chaos with stark shadows and flashing cuts. The band explain that ‘Rescue Light’ has opened their shows all year, and it opens the EP for the same reason, the most relentlessly aggressive song they have written, the one that fires them up before they walk on stage.
The single completes a trilogy alongside earlier tracks ‘Falling Away’ and ‘Baptise’. Across its three songs, Somehow I Still Believe is a cathartic exploration of faith and betrayal, following an individual wrestling with the loss of their faith through anger, hopelessness and bargaining. It blends emo, post-hardcore and indie and it feels fresh.
Following a recent run across Europe and the UK with Never Easy and Love Is Noise, Newshapes are fast becoming one of the most promising names in heavy-hitting UK alternative music. Their last EP A Conversation With Myself has already passed a million Spotify streams.
Newshapes are Ian Mann, Stephen Christie, Michael Hamilton and Logan Whyte.
We have a real soft spot for bands keeping the early-2000s post-hardcore flame alive without simply copying it, and on this evidence, Newshapes are doing exactly that.
